A trolley is used for transportation of radioactive sources from storage or preparation table to operating table. The trolley moves on rails at table height. These extend through an outer wall for the entire length of a radioisotope storage room, preparation room, and operating room. The trolley container is shielded below and on the three inward sides by five cm of Pb. The container dimensions are 20 x 15 x 15 cm. Above there is a 10 x 10 x 10-cm space for loading of large sources and shaped forms. The container is moved by electric motors which are deactivated by an automatic disconnect at each terminus. The trolley is steered in both directions by push-buttons from each of the three rooms. Radioactive sources are easily transported by this means, and multiple sources can be packed in layers within the trolley, in order of planned use. The trolley is brought to the treatment table only for the time actually required. The operating table is designed especially for gynecological Ra and Co/sup 60/ treatments, with three in thick Pb shields below and at each side. A chest shield is emplaced at the foot of the table, leaving the head and extremities of the physician free, but exposed to the radiation. In practice the arrangement reduces the gonad dose to the physician to 1/6, and the lower body exposure is reduced to 1/12 or 1/16, of the unshielded value. Typical radiation dose values for an 80-mg Ra implantation are to head, chest, abdomen, and knee 0.04, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.001 mr/sec, respectively. The number of Ra implantations is limited, by the exposure of the hands to radiation, to 42 for the physician, but to only 8 for the nursing assistant. (BBB)
