A METHOD OF PREPARING THIN POLY-ETHYLENE FOILS FOR (n,p) RADIATORS (in German)

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instr. Methods

A method for preparing polyethylene foils for thin (n,p) radiators is described. These radiators will be used in neutron spectrometry. The method is based on the inelastic stretching of commercial polyethylene foils, which are available in standard thicknesses of 20 mu , 30 mu , 40 mu , 50 mu , and so on. The thickness of a stretched foil is about 0.18 times the thickness of the original foil. The variation of thickness in a 10 cm x 3 cm area of a stretched foil was within the accuracy of measurement of 0.04 mg/cm/sup 2/ in the considered range from 0.3 to 1.5 mg/cm/sup 2/. (Transmission measurements with C/ sup 14/). (auth)
