GRAFT COPOLYMER STUDIES ON MYLAR AND NYLON

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4709965

>A study was made of the graft copolymerization of mylar and nylon with styrene monomer, using both a simultaneous irradiation and a preirradiation technique. The variables studied were the effect of solvents, irradiation temperature, and grafting temperature. In addition to determining the grafting rates, an attempt was made to determine the chain length of the grafted-on polystyrene. The copolymers were hydrolyzed and a determination made of the molecular weight of the polystyrene residue. The grafted-on polystyrene affects the ability to hydrolyze the parent polymer. It was also found that the solvent and irradiation affect the rate of grafting and the chain length of the polystyrene in the copolymer. (JAIF)
