THE BNL RADIATION PROCESSING RESEARCH PROGRAM

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4709930
A research, development, and evaluation effort on the use of nuclear energy for the production of chemicals has been established in the Radiation Division of the Nuclear Engineering Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This radiation processing program is divided into two main areas. One is concerned with the use of nuclear fission reactors as radiation sources for chemicai processing and has been termed the chemonuclear'' reactor program. The other is concerned mainly with the use of isotopes for chemical processing purposes. The chemonuclear reactor radiation is generally indicated for endothermic reactions, involving a net conversion of nuclear to chemical energy, while the isotopic radiation is indicated for exothermic reactors. In the latter case, isotopic radiation becomes economically attractive only for high G value exothermic chain reactions. Experimental work done under the radiation processing program is reviewed.
