SPARK CHAMBER EFFICIENCY FOR ELECTRON SHOWER DETECTION

Journal Article · · Nucl. Instr. Methods

Aluminum and brass spark chambers were placed in an electron beam of momentum 2-10 Bev/c. Showers produced in a Pb converter of variable thickness located st run. Concent 10 m in front of the spark chamber array were photographed. Efficiency measurements were made by defining particle tracks by some of the gaps and using them to test the behavior of the others. Results are shown for chambers filled with pure He and with a He--Ne mixture. It was concluded that there is no basic limitation on the number of relativistic particles that can be simultaneously observed in a spark chamber. (A.G.W.)
