Accuracy of Track Measurement in Spark Chamber; ACCURATEZZA DELLA MISURA DI UNA TRACCIA IN CAMERA A SCINTILLA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4685694
In order to study the possibility of reconstructing from photographs the track of a particle in a spark chamber and to determine the precision limits of such a reconstruction, the following method was used. A straight line was drawn passing through the center of the first and last spark line. The distance between every other spark and the center of the straight line is then measured. This distance, shown graphically, leads to a construction of a distribution curve. The experimental apparatus is described. Both pure He and 10% He saturated with C/sub 6/H/sub 5/OH were used as filling gases. 10 and 45 cm of Pb were used as absorbers. High amplffication projection was used so that the distance could be measured with an error of the order of 0.3 mm. The data obtained are shown graphically and are discussed. It is concluded that in the case of high energy particles the reconstruction of the spark track is possible wtth a precision of less than one mm. (J.S.R.)
