SELF-DIFFUSION OF ZIRCONIUM IN THE /cap beta/-PHASE OF "ZIRCALOY-2"

Zircaloy-2 was smelted in an arc furnace in a purified argon atmosphere from iodide Zr containing (in wt%): Pb 1.5, Fe 0.12. Cr 0.05, and Ni 0.05. On specimens (9 x 10 x 18 mm) Zr/sup 95/ isotope was applied by spraying in a vacuum. Diffusion annealing was performed in a vacuum at 950 to 1200 nif- C. The diffusion coefficient, D, was determined by laminar integral radiometric analysis. At 950, l.7 x 10/sup -9/, 4 x 10/sup -9/, and 8.4 x 10/sup -9/cm/sup 2/ /sec, respec tively. The pre-exponential factor and activation energy of Zr selfdiffusion in Zircaloy-2 were 6 x 10/sup -3/ cm/sup 2//sec and 40,000 cal/g- atom, respectively. It was concluded that an increase in activation energy of Zr self-diffusion in Zircaloy-2 as compared with pure Zr, indicates an increased strength of interatomic bond in alloying with Zr. D was lower in the temperature range investigated in Zircaloy-2 than in pure Zr. Diffusion characteristics of Zircaloy-2 almost do not differ from corresponding characteristics of Zr alloy with 1.5% Sn. (Referativnyy Zhurnal, Metallurgiya, No. 8, 1962).
