Equations are given by which the percentage error in a calculated rate, corrected for counting efficiency, can be determined. The equations are evaluated for a range of counting efficiencies, activities of internal standard, and counting times before and after internal standard addition. For routine counting the addition of 50000 dpm of C14 and 150000 dpm of tritium as internal standard activity, and a 1-min counting time after addition of internal standard, are adequate.
