The reductions of STARu(NH/sub 3/)/sub 6/!/sup 3+/, STARu(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/Cl!/sup 2 +/, and o have 1: 1 stoichiometry, and the specific rates of the reductions were measured. By reoxidation of the Ru/sup 2+/ species, it was found thnt the Ru/sup 2+/-NH/sub 3/ bonds remain intact in acid solution for nt least 1 hr, and the oxidation rate with ClO/sub 4/ was measured. The reaction (Ru(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/H/sub 2/O!/sup 3+/ + Cl/sup -/ yields (Ru(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/Cl!/sup 2+/ + H/sub 2/O is catalyzed by STARu(NH/sub 3/)/sub 5/!/sup 2+/, and the equilibrium constant was found to be 43 plus or minus 3 at 25 deg C and mu =0.1.
