Experiments show that the ruthenium red cation is STARu/sub 3/O/sub 2/ (NH/sub 3/)/sub 1//sub 4/!/sup 6//sup +/ in which there are two oxo-bridges and the average oxidation number of ruthenium is +10/3. The cation is oxidized reversioly by a one-electron to the more paramagnetic brown cation STARu/sub 3/O/ sub 2/(NH)/sub 3//sub 1//sub 4/!/sup 7//sup +/. The relation to other polynuclear complexes is discussed. (auth)
