A new method for the preparation of P/sup 32/ in a high specific activity free from P/sup 32/ is presented. The principle of the method lies in using the (n, gamma ) reaction instead of the (n,p) reaction for preventing P/ sup 33/ contamination and following re Sziland-Chalmers method for preparation of a high specific activity product. Potassium dihydrogenphosphate was selected as the target material. By irradiation of the phosphate salt in a reactor, various kinds of condens phosphates and condensed metaphosphates tagged by P/sup 32/ were formed besides retention as orthophosphate. Condensed phosphates were separated by a strongly basic anion exchange resin, Daiaion SA 100, and recovered in good percentage as the final enrichment factor of 10/sup 3/ approximates 10/sup 4/. Condensed phosphate ions were retained in the resin column by passing the 0.1M irradiated phosphate solution and 0.025M KCl and 0.025M HCl mixeNoned solution. The orthophosphate ion was eluted with the same KCl and HCl mixed solution. For elution of condensed phosphates, 8M HCl solution was passed through the column. The percent recovery and the enrichment factor were affected by temperature, time, and neutron flux in neutron irradiation. The former decreased with the increase of neutron flux and more effectively by irradiation time, while the latter was slightly changed. Experiments under rather serious conditions of irradiation, for example, at a neutron flux of 1.1 x 10/sup 13/ n/cm/sup 2//sec for 24 hr, showed that P/sup 32/ in 16 mC/mg of specific activity was obtained with a yield of 1.3 mC/g of KH/sub 2/PO/sub 4/.
