FINAL REPORT OF NEUTRON CROSS-SECTIONS AND NUCLEAR SPECTROSCOPY
A fast delayed coincidence spectrometer built at Oregon State University is described, and the operation of some of its electronic components is discussed. Calibration of the spectrometer for fast pulse shaping, with artificial pulses and with nuclear pulses from gamma decay of copper-64 and cobalt-60 is explained. Calibration curves are included, and use of the spectrometer in neutron time- offiight cyclotron beam pulse studies as well as in investigation of the use of the cyclotron as a neutron source is reported. The arrangements used in these experiments are diagrammed. In addition, the directional correlation between the 1.119-Mev gamma ray and the 0.885-Mev gamma ray in the de-excitation of excited titanium-46 is measured to study the spin and parity assignment of the 2.004-Mev state as well as the mixing ratio of multipolarities in the upper transition. Procedure is described, and an assignment of ( ) for the 2.004-Mev state is made. Inclusion of at most 0.005 plus or minus 0.002% M3 radiation mixed with pure E2 in the 1.119-Mev gamma ray is noted.
