Since 1952, effluent from Windscale has been discharged through a pipeline into the Irish Sea. The hydrography of the Sea area and its background radioactivity are described. Monitoring data collected in 1959 are presented for the beta activities of the sea bottom near Sellafield and in surface water, surface plankton, and bottom invertebrates in various parts of the Sea. The maximum permissible concentrations for beta activity in the sea bottom material, fish, and seaweed are rarely exceeded even for short periods of time. (D.L.C.)
