THE BIOLOGICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION IN THE IRISH SEA OF RADIOACTIVE EFFLUENT FROM WINDSCALE WORKS 1959 TO 1960

Investigations to determine the fate of the radioactive effluent which is discharged from Windscale Works into the northeastern Irish Sea were made. The ash contents of 17 species of seaweeds and 67 species of invertebrates common in the sea area were determined. Levels of radioactivity originating from k/sup 40/ and other naturally occurring radioisotopes were investigated and are discussed. A few measurements of nuclides in the sea areas distant from Sellafield were made to assess the contribution to the Irish Sea of nuclides from fallout sources. The levels of BETA activity in the samples of marine organisms decreased by a factor of 20 in the first 20 miles of distance north or south from Sellafield. No significant build-up of effluent material has taken place in tlie vicinity of Sellafield during the past 7 years, nor is there evidence of a build- up in any other area. No organisms were found to concentrate fission products by factors greater than those previously known. Typical concentration factors for ruthenium, cerium, and zirconium in seaweeds and invertebrates were of the order of 1000. Values for cesium were about 100 and for strontium less than 40. For fish, the concentration factors tended to be somewhat lower, especially for ruthenium and strontium. Marked differences were found between species and this enables a number of species to be selected for possible use as biological indicators. Of the seaweeds, Laminaria spp: Corallina officinalis, and Ceramium rubrum are suitable. Among the animals the most convenient are the polychaete worms, Balanus porcatus (barnacle), Littorina littorea (winkle), and Crangon vuigaris (shrimp). (auth)
