FOODS AND FALLOUT

The source and nature of radioactiv-e fallout are discussed, and the effects of the principal constituents: C/sup 14/, Cs/sup 137/, Sr/sup 90/, and I/ sup 131/, on humans are reviewed. Natu rally occurring radionuciides in food, such as Ra/sup 226/, Th/sup 228/, and K/sup 40/, are considered from the viewpoint of dietary levels and the doses received by humans. Levels of I/sup 131/ and Sr/sup 90/ following weapons tests are examined with respect to geographic variations and differences in various foods. Hazards of Sr/sup 90/ and possible means of removing it from milk are discussed. It is concluded that there are arguments for accepting the assumption that for every increment of radiation exposure there is a corresponsing increment of biological effect. Based on this and other assumptions, admissible calculations can be made as to the potential number of genetic mutations, and cases of leukemia from radioactive fallout. There is no sharp dividing line below which there is complete safety and above which there is a serious hazard, and the problem becomes one of balancing benefits against risks. (H.H.D.)
