Sludges produced or used during the decontamination of radioactive liquids at Harwell are classified as to type and origin. Production of sludge is discussed including an appraisal of the rectangular sludge blanket, pulsator, and upward-flow circular precipitators, and a consideration of sludge freezing and centrituging. Included is a table describing the results of various treatment methods to Harwell sludges. Difficulties encountered with sludge disposal by dumping at sea, storage in tanks, and burial are discussed. (Public Health Eng. Abstr., 43: No. 3. March 1963)
