In order to study the mechanism of the oxygen effect in x-ray--induced mutations, Drosophila melanogaster OregonR males were irradiated in oxygen at 25 deg C and 0 deg C., thus at normal and low metabolism. Sex-linked x-ray -- induced recessive lethals were scored, and no difference was found in the mutation frequency induced by the two treatments at different temperature. The oxygen effect was considered independent from the metabolism of the irradiated cells. (auth)
