POWER REACTOR DEVELOPMENT EVALUATION. A Summary Report by a Committee of AECL Staff

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4702684
In view of the competitive economic position and advanced stage of design and development, the D/sub 2/O-cooled reactor deserves priority for extension to higher power ratings and general improvement. Both 450 and 750 Mw(e) designs for D/sub 2/O-cooled reactors should be pursued for first application. The economic attraction of the organic-cooled design justifies its continued development. The advantages of higher pressure working steam and higher efficiency coupled with easier containment and lower toxicity in maintenance indicate that boiling (or fog) and organic-cooled designs should be pursued. The possibly lower cost of UC fuel suggests a further advantage of the organic-cooled designs but sets a challenge to fuel development for the water- and steam-cooled reactors. Development of the fog- and boiling-water-cooled channels should be continued. (N.W.R.)
