A review on the priority of D/sub 2/O reactors is given. Economies of scale should permit a considerable reduction in unit power costs for D/sub 2/O- cooled reactors. In view of the competitive economic position and advanced stage of design and development, the D/sub 2/O-cooled reactor deserves priority for extension to higher power ratings. However, the organic cooled and boiling (or fog) cooled variants offer sufficient economic attraction to justify continued development. The potential of these is such that at least another 10% could be lopped off the best costs obtainable from D/sub 2/Ocooled reactors. Data are given on four reactor concepts in profile: D/sub 2/O cooled; boiling H/sub 2/O cooled; H/sub 2/O fog cooled; and organic cooled. (P.C.H.)
