IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO HEAT EXCHANGERS AND TO THE CLADDING OF FUEL ELEMENTS UTILIZED IN NUCLEAR REACTORS

Heat exchange means forming elements of heat exchangers or the cladding of nuclear fuel elements are formed by two metal sheets welded together by hot rolling. Before the rolling process an appropriate substance is interposed at given zones between said sheets, to prevent the mutual welding of the sheets within said zones. The sheets are then placed between two die halves, each of them provided with cavities. A pressurized fluid is introduced between the sheets at the non-welded zones, to press the sheets into the adjacent die halves, so that they get the desired shape in which they enclose a series of parallel cylindrical cavities. Preferably the outside faces of the sheets are machined before the rolling process to bring them in such a shape that after the deformation between the dies these faces comprise ribs or corrugations improving the heat transfer.
