THE DETECTION OF FAST NEUTRONS BY MEANS OF LIQUID-HEXANE-FILLED IONIZATION CHAMBERS (in French)

Journal Article · · J. Phys.
OSTI ID:4702285

The use of a vacuum-tight polyethylene bag filled with hexane and inserted between the electrodes of the chamber keeps the liquid away from the walls and lowers the residual current below 5 x 10/sup -14/ A/cm/sup 2/, a value that is stable as a function of time. The ionization current is a linear function of the flux, with neutrons of 14.6 and 3 Mev, produced by D-T and D-D reactions; 85 per cent of this current is attributable to neutrons and 15 per cent to gamma photons accompanying them. The sensitivity is 400 n cm/sup -2/ s/ sup -1/ (3 Mev), 1,000 n cm/sup -2/ s/sup -1/ (14.6 Mev), 10,000 photons cm/sup - 1/ s/sup -1/ (Co/sup 60/). (auth)
