able primary solute in liquid scintillators. As wavelengthshifters 3,3',2'''',3''''' -tetramethylsexiphenyl (TMSP) or POPOP (1,4-di- STA2-(5-phenyl, oxazolyl)!-benzol) can be used. Counting efficiency for tritium in toluene is 30% higher with TMQP-POPOP than with PPO-POPOP. In counting of tritiated water with dioxane-ethanol-xylenescintillators, PPO (2,5-diphenyloxazol) gives the better sensitivity; but with dioxane -anisol-dimethylglycol the figure of merit is somewhat better if TMQP is used. The latter solvent mixture is recommended to count low specific activities. For C/sup 14/ the counting efficiency is nearly the same with TMQP as with PPO. Studies were made on the effect of secondary solvents in scintillators containing TMQP, PPO, and p-terphenyl; naphthalene interferes with the scintillation process of TMQP. Against quenching by mineral acids, TMQP-scintillators are more resistant than those with PPO. (auth)
