PRODUCTION OF NITRIC OXIDES AND RADIOCARBON IN IRRADIATED NITROGEN-OXYGEN SYSTEM (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Zh. Prikl. Khim.

Formation of nitric oxide and radioactive carbon in the nitrogen-oxygen system irradiated in a reactor by a flux of 10/sup 12/ to 10/sup 13/ neutron/cm/ sup 2/ sec was investigated. It was shown that the effect on N-O is identical to that of radiation and electrons. Maximum reaction rate in a reactor corresponds to the N to O ratio which is about 3:2 while in other emissions it is 1: 1. Reactor energy yield for the air at 1 atm and 30 c- C is 1.55, at 0.135 atm, 0.6, and at 3.3 atm, 1.2 N/sub 2/O molecules per 100 ev. The relative yield of radiocarbon is a function of the mixture composition, neutron flux, pressure, temperature and radiation intensity. At 1 atm and 20 c- C the ratio for the air is STAC/sup 14/!:STANO/sub 2/! = 2.1 x 10/sup -3/%. Rel ations were developed for neutron flux, irradiation intensity, production rate of NO/sub 2/, and relative yield of radiocarbon. (R.V.J.)
