THE ENERGY SUPPLY FOR THE LARGE THETA-PINCH EXPERIMENT AT GARCHING (in German)

An account is given of the basic arrangement, construction and data of the 1.5 Mw energy store for a large Theta pinch experiment in the Garching Institute for Plasma Physics. The installation comprises three condenser batteries: one 10 kv battery, a fast 40 kv battery, and the main battery with a charging voltage of 30 or 4O kv corresponding to an energy content of 1.5 or 2.7 Mw respectively. The maximum compression field of the discharge coil amounts to 90 to 180 kG. It is expected that the density of plasma produced will be about 10/sup 17/ to 10/sup 18/ cm/sup -3/, the temperature some 10/sup 7/ deg K. The parts of the energy store which are most highly stressed and significant are proportioned to have a life of 10/sup 5/ discharges at 30 kv and about 2.101 discharges at 40 kv charging voltage.
