Title: Study of capacitive energy storage for a theta-pinch PTR compression coil

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4351925

From 5th symposium on engineering problems of fusion research; Princeton, New Jersey, USA (6 Nov 1973). The present Los Alamos theta-pinch experiments shock heat and compress the plasma with a single high-voltage, low- inductance capacitor bank. The Los Alamos theta-pinch physics test reactor experiment (PTR) will use independent energy systems to perform these two functions. The implosion-heating coil will be driven by a number of high- voltage (125 kV) pulse-forming networks in series around the coil. The compression coil will be driven by a relatively slow rising current froin a magnetic energy transfer system (METS) or a iow-voltage capacitor bank. A study of a low-voltage (10 kV), low-cost capacitor bank to drive the compression coil is presented. The experiment under consideration has a 30-m major radius with a 16-cm bore and requires a maximum compression field of 60 kG. The total energy in the compression Storage system is about 300 MJ. The capacitor bank being considered will store 150 MJ. The development program for the capacitors and switches is described. The system considerations are presented and a table of costs is given.
