STABILIZING PIEZOELECTRIC CERAMICS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4701144
Piezoelectric ceramics consist of polycrystaliine aggregates of ferroelectric crystals that have been fired to ceramic maturity and subjected to electrostatic fields, giving them electromechanical properties similar to piezoelectric materials. The electromechanical properties of such ceramics can be improved, and the degradation with age of these properties lessened, by cyclically heating and quenching the materials and subsequently exposing them to gamma radiation doses of 10/sup 4/ to 10/sup 9/ roentgens. Results obtained with lead zirconate titanate are displayed. (D.C.W.)
