NUCLEAR REACTOR BURST CARTRIDGE DETECTION
Patent

A device to detect both slow and rapid failure of fuel elements in a fluid-cooled nuclear reactor is patented. The failures are detected by drawing samples of cooling fluid from the fuel element channels. A first monitoring device monitors at one sensitivity samples from a selected group of channels, while a second monitoring device simuitaneously monitors the remainder of the channels at a lower sensitivity. A sequencing device causes the first monitoring device to monitor sequentially all of the channels in groups, while the remaining channels are being monitored by the second monitoring device. The design of the monitoring and sequencing devices are described in detail. (M.P.G.)
