DESIGN OF A CELL FOR MEASUREMENT OF RADIOACTIVITY (in Japanese)

A new type of cell for measurement of the concentration of radioactive solutions was designed, constructed, and used for routine measurement of the concentration of radioisotope products prepared at Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. Both volumes and radioactivities of the solutions are measured in it. The cell is divided into two parts: one for operating radioactive solutions of pure beta emitters and the other for gamma emitters. Each side is plated with 5 cm of lead. Radioactive materials in the cell are handled by two ball socket manipulators and special tongs. In order to observe inside the cell, a lead glass window, 20 x 20 x 10 cm is used for the gamma part and an organic glass plate 1 cm thick for the beta part. An operation table is set in the middle of the cell. Radiation detectors, mechanisms of special tongs, and drawer guides are under this table. For inserting radioactive materials into the cell, a container with a lead drawer is used. Thus, the operation area in the cell is made wider. The dose rates at the outer surface of the cell do not exceed 10 mr/ hr, provided the following quantities of radioisotopes are individually handled: for example, 27 mC for Na/sup 24/, 100 mC for Co/sup 60/, 44 C for I/sup 131/, and 350 C for Au/sup 198 (JAIF)
