THE THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF SCANDIUM FORMATE AND OXALATE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4699192

The thermal decomposition of scandium formate and scandium oxalate in vacuum and various atmospheres was studied using an automatic recording thermobalance. Scandium formate, Sc(HCO/sub 2/)/sub 3/, decomposes to Sc/sub 2/O/ sub 3/, CO, and H/sub 2/O, as expected, plus a significant amount of CO/sub 2/ as well as detectable amounts of H/sub 2/, HCOOCH/sub 3/, and CH/sub 4/. In the scandium oxalate series the dodecahydrate, hexahydrate, dihydrate, anhydrous oxalate, and the oxide were identified. No definite carbonate intermediate was found. The decomposition gases, aside from hydrate water, are CO/sub 2/ and CO, with the CO/sub 2/ in excess. (auth)
