Work continued on the development of procedures for end capping HWCTR metal tubes by brazing. A chemical milling process was established capable of producing recesses with smooth surfaces at a practical rate. The formation of voids in the braze alloy was reduced by increasing the time at brazing temperature and by slowly cooling the braze alloy. Procedures were established for obtaining reproducible hot hardness values for uranium by proper sample preparation and uniform method of measurement. The hardness of uranium was determined from room temperature to 600 c- C. No difference in hardness was observed between ingot and dingot stocks. The hardness of U-0.3 wt% Al-0.5 wt% Si alloy as solution treated and as aged was determined from room temperature to 500 c- C; the values were higher by a factor of two than for uranium. A preliminary estimate of the solubility of Si in U-0.3 wt% Al at 950 c- C was 0.18 to 0.25 wt%. A comparison was made of cladding thicknesses determined for inner and outer HWCTR tubes by autoradiography and eddy current measurements. For the outside claddings an eddy current value can be converted to a corresponding autoradiography value by applying a correction of about one mil. For the inside cladding of outer tubes, no correction is necessary. (auth)
