PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYPROPYLENE-STYRENE GRAFT COPOLYMER INDUCED BY IRRADIATION (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4697305

The physical properties of styrene grafted polypropylene, such as viscoelasticity and thermal expansion in the glass transition region, were measured to get information on the structure of amorphous region. On the other hand, x-ray diffraction measurement and microscopic observation were effected to make clear the effects of grafi copolymerization on the crystalline region of polypropylene. It was found that the amorphous region of polypropylene decreased by graft copolymerization. The homogenrously mixed structure of polypropylene and polystyrene was induced by graft copolymerization and formed in the amorphous region. Styrene diffused to the amorphous region and imperfect crystals of polypropylene and polymerized; therefore, a homogeneous mixture of polypropylene and polystyrene formed. Styrene penetrated into the gaps of lamellas, and the amorphous region of pure polystyrene was formed by polymerization. (P.C.H.)
