THERAPY OF HYPERTHYROIDISM WITH I-131. THYROID UPTAKE RATE AND EFFECTIVE HALF LIFE IN I-131 THERAPEUTIC DOSE

Precise values of therapeutic I/sup 131/ uptake and the effective half life were studied by a new direct measurement, using a common scaler. Uptake measurements were carried out on various phantoms, each containing 3 mC of I/sup 131/ in the thyroid gland and 2 mC uniform extending over the body as body background. The standard source contained 5 mC of I/sup 131/, so the thyroid uptake of the phantoms was just 60%. A 1 in. x 1 in. Nal crystal, flat field collimator, and medical spectrometer were used in all measurements. The correct values of thyroid uptake were obtained by experimental methods using crystal skin distance 150 cm, 364 plus or minus 30 kev and crystal skin distance 45 cm, integral counting measurement with inserted lead cone in the collimator. The mean value of the 24-hr uptakes of therapeutic doses of 51 hyperthyroid patients treated with I/sup 131/ is 48%, while that of diagnostic doses measured on the day before the I/sup 131/ therapy is 58%. Difference between the uptakes of therapeutic and diagnostic doses is 10 to 15% in mean value and the standard deviation is 15%. The same relation is shown in 3-hr uptakes. (P.C.H.)
