ABSOLUTE THERMAL NEUTRON DENSITY MEASUREMENTS BY THE ACTIVATION METHOD USING LIQUID SCINTILLATORS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4696887
Details of a method of absolute beta activity measurements by dissolving the active sample in liquid scintillator and extrapolating the bias curves to zero discrimination are worked out. This method was used for absolute thermal neutron density measurements by an activation method using five nuclides: phosphorus, sodium, iodine, manganese, and indium. For all these elements suitable chemical compounds soluble in the liquid scintillator were chosen and the whole chemical procedure was developed. In favorable conditions densities in the range 10/sup -2/ to 10/sup 9/ n/ccm can be measured with an accuracy of 4%. (auth)
