INELASTIC PROTON SCATTERING ON COMPLEX NUCLEI AT 27 Gev

Inelastic interactions of 27-Bev protons (CERN proton beam) on complex nuclei were studied. It is shown that particles producing cascades in the nuclei in which they are produced play no important role. Dividing the events in p-p and p-n interactions the primary nucleons were separated, and the differential and integral angular distributions of the produced pi mesons were measured. There is a very small anisotropy in the c.m.s. For the pions a mean energy of gamma /sub ss/ = 2.18 plus or minus 0.5 (rest mass units) is calculated. The degree of inelasticity K/sub s/= 0.29 plus or minus 0.08 agrees with a theory of Heisenberg. (auth)
