Suspension of fuel rods within a tubular fuel assembly by thin plate- like support members resting on the uppermost of a series of grid members formed by intersecting webs disposed edge-wise to the coolant flow and attached to the housing relieves the rods of compressive forces and permits good coolant flow. The lattice defined by the webs locates the rods, gives freedom for expansion, and avoids chatter and vibration. (D.C.W.)
