With the objective of clarifying the manner in which the midbrain covering effects the reaction of the cortex as a result of irradiation, the reticular formation was destroyed in 5 rats and the subthalarnus in 7. There were six unoperated controls. A definite similarity was observed in the radiation reaction of the cortex of the two operated groups, the development of an early bioelectric reaction in the cortex following 1000 r irradiation being similar. The general conditions of the animals changed greatly: breathing became infrequent, pulses became faster, motor activity decreased progressively, fur fell out, appetite disappeared, stools became liquid with blood, and weight declined. All animals died the first day after irradiation. Anatomically it has been shown that the path from the covering of the midbrain to the cortex is through the subthalamus. Therefore the path is most probably the same in the irradiated animal. Charts are given which show the electroencephalograms before and after irradiation, with electrocardiograms, light stimulation response, and breathing of animals of the two operated groups. (TTT)
