THE INFLUENCE OF UREA PEROXIDE ON THE POST-IRRADIATION RECOVERY OF INFUSORIA (in Russian)

In view of the previously reported effect of urea peroxide on the mechanism of radiation injury, the coNonentribution of this compound, considered as a representative of organic peroxides, to the post-irradiation recovery of cells was investigated. Paramecium caudatum cultures, kept in darkness at 21 deg C were exposed to the gamma radiation of a Co/sup 60/ source at a dose rate of 248 to 275 r/sec to a total dose 10/sup -3/ M urea peroxide solutions. It was found that 5 days after the treatment with the urea peroxide solution, the control specimens exhibited a constant rate of fission, regardless of the concentration of the solution. The fission rate of the cultures irradiated in urea peroxide did not differ from that of another control series, irradiated under water. It is concluded that the urea peroxide does not affect the postirradiation recovery of the cells. It was assumed that the ionizing radiation and the organic peroxide act on the same substratum of the cells; however, the results showed that exposure to radiation causes considerably wider range of injuries of the substratum than the organic peroxides.
