WATER AND ELECTROLYTE BALANCE STUDIED BY RADIOISOTOPES. II. THE EXCHANGE OF SODIUM (Na*SUP 22/) AND RUBIDIUM (Rb*SUP 86/) IN A PATIENT WITH BONE METASTASES FROM MAMMARY CARCINOMA TREATED WITH COBALT THERAPY

Studies were conducted in a patient with metastatic cancer who received Co/sup 60/ radiotherapy, consisting of a total of 6440 r over 7 weeks to the lumbar vertebrae and 3000 r over 2 weeks to the pituitary. To investigate electrolyte exchange postirradiation, the patient was injected with 25 C Na/ sup 22/ and 1000 C Rb/sup 86/, and excretion of the isotopes in urine and feces was followed. The half-time values for Na/sup 22/ were 15.5 days for urinary excretion, 12.5 days for tissue radioactivity, and 8 days for plasma radioactivity. The half-time values for Rb/sup 86/ were 45 days for fecal and urinary excretion and 6.8 days for plasma disappearance. Na exchange could be represented mathematically by the expression: A/sub t/ = A/sub 0/e -/sup (0.045+0.025)t/, where A/sub t/ and A/sub 0/ signify body radioa ctivity at time (t) and time (0). The corresponding expression for K (Rb) was: A/sub t/ = A/sub 0/e/sup -(0.086+0.016)t/. Urinary excretion of Na/s up 22/ was diminished following irradiation, while Rb/sup 86/ excretion was unchanged. (H.H.D.)
