The manufacture of fuel rod cans having helical fins and longitudinal splitters is reported. The splitters are formed by extrusion on a cylindrical member extruded therewith, followed by cutting away the greater part of said member between the splitters to leave braces between them at intervals therealong. The extrusion is so performed that the splitters have portions that project radially inwardiy between the braces. The integral splitter body is then slipped into a helically finned can, the inward projections engaging longitudinal slots that are cut in the helices. Fina1ly the braces are deformed into transversal grooves in the helical fins. (NPO)
