ASPECTS OF RADIATION-CHEMICAL REACTIONS IN OIL TECHNOLOGY AND PETROLEUM CHEMISTRY (in German)

The Co/sup 60/ and Cs/sup 137/ radiation sources are only to be considered for the irradiation of relatively small quantities of material or for reactions which requlre small doses. In spite of a continual decrease in price these sources could scarcely be considered by the raw materials industry on grounds of cost. Future prospects are shown to lie with the so-called chemistry nuclear reactor which will be built mainly for the irradiation of materials. The cracking of oils is one important task to be solved by technical radiation chemistry. A further important application may be in the desulfurisation of petroleum compounds. Radiation isomerisation also possesses great technical interest. An early introduction of the new methods is to be expected in the fields of halogenizartion, nitration, sulfo-chlorination, etc. In addition to the radiochemical synthesis of compounds the large irradiation installations have great significance in the field of radioinduced polymerisation.
