Crystals such as mica and quartz, glasses, and plastics that exhibit radiation-damage trails from fission fragments when selectively etched were used as dosimeters for fust and thermal neutrons. The dosimeter consists of a thin detector sheet of such a solid covered by a sheet of fissile material. Recoiling fragments from neutron-induced fission produce tracks in the detector sheet, which is then etched and examined either microscopically or by a readout device to obtain the number of etched-out holes. For monitoring very high doses, the fissile cover is omitted and uranium impurities in the solid itself are utilized. Most of these solids are completely insensitive to gamma rays, electrons, protons, and alpha particles. (C.E.S.)
