A cylindrical ionization chamber is patented, which has a large volume of uniform sensitivity, within which the ionization current remains constant regardless of the position of the source. The high- and low-voltage electrodes are cylinders coaxial with the wall of the chamber. The distance between the electrodes is made variable along the axis of the chamber, with the distance a minimum in the vicinity of the central region of the chamber. The interelectrode dstance may be varied by collars of conductive material attached to the electrodes in adjustable positions, or by one of the electrodes having a curved profile along the axis of the chamber.
