A method is described for sheathing a rectangular fuel plate so that the advantages of thin sheathing are not offset by the disadvantage of radiation swelling of thinly sheathed fuel. The sheath consists of a thin metallic cover that leaves space around the edges to accomondate transverse swelling of the fuel within. The sheath may be ribbed on one or both sides to provide separation of adjacent elements. (T.F.H.)
