THE SEPARATION OF $sup 242$Cm FROM JRR-1 NEUTRON IRRADIATED $sup 241$Am. CATION EXCHANGE WITH $alpha$-HYDROXY ISOBUTYRATE

The separation was carried out at room temperature by elution with 0.5M ammonium alpha -hydroxy isobutyrate of pH 3.68 from the column of 8% cross linked Diaion SK # 1. The flow rate of 1 drop/5 min was found to give a good separation of Cm /sup 242/ from Am/sup 241/. The separation factor was calculated to be 1.49. Radiochemical purity of curium fraction was checked by means of decay curve and alpha pulse height analyses. (auth)
