ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION-BUREAU OF MINES PROCESS HEAT REACTOR PROGRAM. Quarterly Progress Report, February 1-April 30, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4693623
A flowsheet for the Induction-Heated Simulated Nuclear Reactor (ISR) system with a coal gasifier is given. All major components for the ISR gasification system were fabricated and installed. Work on piping and instrumentation is in progress. The helium-- graphite suspension loop is being modified so that temperature in all parts of the loop are well above the saturation temperature of steam. To accomplish this the water-cooled exchanger is being replaced by an exchanger cooled with boiling glycol and the compressor is being modified to operate at temperatures to 500 deg F. Tests with a small loop showed that most of the graphite settled in the impeller housing of the compressor. Equipment is being installed for the pilot-scale heliumgraphite suspension loop. Suspensions of powdered coal in nitrogen and micronized graphite in nitrogen were cycled in a loop. Tests were made on an electrostatic precipitator at various temperatures and pressures. (M.C.G.)
