AN INVESTIGATION OF OXYCAINE IN THE PROPHYLAXIS AND TREATMENT OF ACUTE RADIATION SICKNESS

An investigation was carried out on the effect upon radiation sickness of oxycaine, a compound with a novocainelike action synthesized in the Institute of Fine Organic Chemistry, AS Arm. SSR. The experiments were carried out on three groups of white rats; the first received oxycaine subcutaneously in a dose of 25 to 30 mg/kg 5 to 15 minutes before x-irradiation in a dose of 660 r; the second received the same dose both before and after irradiation; and the third group was irradiated only. The animals were observed for one month. A protective effect was observed in those treated with oxycaine; thus, 27 of 52 rats in the first group survived, 20 of 30 in the second, and 9 of 42 in the third group. The protective effect was much less when the dose of irradiation was increased to 770 r, and absent with a dose of 1200 r. No therapeutic effect was observed when oxycaine was given only after irradiation. (OTS)
