COHERENT INTERACTION OF AN ELECTRON BEAM WITH PLASMA (in Russian)

It was shown previously that interaction of an electron beam with plasma reinforces the oscillations with a frequency ciose to the plasma frequency; this is accompanied by coherent energy losses. These losses of the energy of a modulated electron beam passing through the plasma were measured by means of an electrostatic analyzer and a phase analyzer with a resolution of 0.2 to 0.4% of the original beam energy. It was found that the losses are due to an increase of the longitudinal regulating oscillations in the plasma to a frequency level causing the magnification of the high-frequency component of the beam; as a result of this, the current is scattered on these oscillations. The distribution of the density was found to be nonuniform with respect to the radius. If the duration of the interaction is short, the amplitude of the high-frequency field is low and no coherent interaction can be observed. (TTT)
