FIRST SEMI-ANNUAL PROGRESS REPORT ON ORGANIC COOLANT TECHNOLOGY DURING MAY THROUGH OCTOBER 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4692575
The extent to which various constituents of organic reactor moderator- coolants used at equilibrium can contribute to the fouling of fuel element surfaces was studied. The study technique involves labeling all compounds comprising the coolant with either C/sup 14/ or H/sup 3/ and measuring the specific C/sup 14 or H/sup 3/ activities of the film deposited on a heater tube as determined in dilution specimens in OMRE coolant. Work on film formation studies was devoted to construction of a capsule fouling test apparatus and preparation of labeled coolants. In decontamination studies, a promising Ni agent was examined for use in removal of S/sup 35/ and P/sup 32/ from organic coolants. Further work is in progress on this and other metals and reduced oxides for removal of these contaminants. (J.R.D.)
