Trihydrides of Ce and La were prepared by direct reaction of hydrogen with the metal at room temperature. Three lanthanum hydrides LaH/sub 2.66/, LaH/ sub 2.26/, and LaH/sub 1.97/, and four cerium hydrides CeH/sub 2.97/, CeH/sub 2.59/, CeH/sub 2.24/, and CeH/sub 2/ were prepared by heating the trihydride in vacuum and pumping off the hydrogen gas. These lower hydrides were stable in vacuum ( approximates 10/sup -3/ mm Hg std) at room temperature. The hydrides were hot pressed between sheets of plastic, and stored in vacuum or dry CO/sub 2/ to avoid reaction with oxygen or water vapor in the air. The LIII x-ray absorption spectra were taken on a focusing vacuum spectrograph with a second- order reflection from the (1011) plane of a bent quartz crystal. The resolution of the instrument was 7500. Ce and La hydrides did not show any fine structure. The cerium and lanthanum were trivalent in these hydrides. No change in structure and in position of the L-spectra can be observed on going from the dihydride to the trihydride. Hence, there is no change in valence state of the rare earth metal in these compounds. The compound becomes more ionic on going from the dihydride to the trihydride with a decrease in electrical conductivity. (TTT)
