HIGH DOSE FERROUS DOSIMETRY FOR Co-60 $gamma$-RAYS (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Proc. Japan Conf. Radioisotopes
OSTI ID:4690903

A simple method of high level dosimetry for Co/sup 60/ gamma rays was studied with the use of ferrous salts (ferrous ammonium sulfate or ferrous sulfate) in sulfuric acid solution, without degassing or nitrogen substitution. The relationship between irradiation dose and the concentration of ferric ion produced was examined in the presence of various concentrations of solutes. The linear relationship obtained in the oxygen-exhausted region can be extended to higher dose by using higher concentrations of ferrous salt and sulfuric acid. In a system of 0.5M ferrous ammonium sulfate in 5N sulfuric acid, the linearity holds up to 1.2 x 10/sup 7/ r. The oxidation yield of ferrous ion, however, decreases with increasing solute concentration. It has been shown that the decrease of G(Fe/sup 3+/) is due to both ammonium and molecular sulfuric acid. For high level dosimetry, it is desirable to use a lower concentration of sulfuric acid ( approximates 0.8N) and a higher concentration of ferrous sulfate ( approximates 0.5M) instead of ferrous ammonium sulfate. In the system of ferrous sulfate in 0.8N suifuric acid, G(Fe/sup +3/) is almost independent of ferrous suifate concentration up to 0.5M. In the case of 0.6M ferrous sulfate in 0.8N sulfuric acid soiution, the linearity between irradiation dose and the concentration of ferric ion produced holds up to 6 x 10/sup 6/ r, and G(Fe/sup 3+/ ) is tion of dose rate of megacurie Co/sup 60/ source as well.
